Munro
Its interview time again and to kick off proceedings for 2010 we dig deep into Port Elizabeth where we get the chance to touch base with a DJ that’s been on the progressive circuit for over 2 decades. His founder and head honcho behind the buzzin 52 Parliament and one of South Africa’s dance music stalwarts. He is a passionate musician and a national treasure to clubland and if you were wondering who I’m talking about, it’s none other than Munro Munnik. This is what he had to say towards his up and coming visit to Joburg…

Welcome to Spencerville Munro. How has 2010 been for u thus far?
Thank you. 2010 has been a bit quiet but starting to pick up nicely now.

Munro you’ve been the main man behind clubs such as Bumble-Bush, Shine-I and now of course 52 Parliament.  How difficult is it at the moment to open a club in SA and make it a successful business?
The clubbing industry is not as easy as people think but u think if you have the right location and product with a bit of luck you should succeed. Licensing is always a problem too.

Saying that, 52 Parliament’s 10th year running is coming up soon. You must be a proud club owner to see how the club started out and where it is today?
I’ve never really reflected on it to much but occasionally at 3 in the morning the place has that special energy and it does make you feel kind of proud.

Munro on the DJing side, 20 years behind the decks is a staggering achievement. Can you give us some of the highlights of your career that really stand out for u?
I’ve had the privilege of playing with most of SA’s best DJ’s in most of our top cities and clubs. Highlights would probably be supporting internationals like Dave Seaman, Carl Cox, Nigel Dawson, Nic Fancuilli, Pete Bones and many more. But that said, I’ve had some of my best nights at my club as well as obscene places like small clubs in East London, Cape Town and forest parties in Plett.

Port Elizabeth’s been pretty much under the radar from a serious clubbing point of view. How exceptive is the scene to a more underground type of sound?
P.E has been weaned on underground music since ’95, probably due to underground labels like “Touche” where I was playing at the time. I was also getting all of my music from UK record shops like Swag (Jerry Francis, Nathan Coles, Jitten) as well Plastic Fantastic (Johnny Orange) and people I knew at the time.

What other talented DJ’s in your opinion is making waves in P.E?
Probably my residents Garth and Morne.

Futurism is a concept party aimed at celebrating the past 20 years in South Africa’s Electronic Dance Music scene. You’ve been chosen to headline the second installment of their “Legends” series. How do you feel about that?
I feel privileged thank you and I’m looking forward to the gig.

With the World Cup just a few months away, are you planning on doing any big events over that period?
We will probably be trading 7 days a week with different theme nights. Pete Bones (Red Ant records) will be staying with me and playing a few nights.

Can u give us a run down of your up and coming gig’s over the next few months and where one can get in touch with you?
Sat 27 March - Funk Shui @ 52 Parliament
Fri 09 April       - Futurism @ Voodoo Lounge
Sat 24 April     - Truth
Sat 1 May        - St Francis

What can the clubbers expect from your set at Futurism?
Some kick ass underground tech house, techno and Progressive. Thanks again
