Percussive, deep, moving and distinctly kickin'. We catch up with one of Joburg’s finest hard hitters, better know as the Jack Hammer. We get the lowdown of Delon Palm’s latest event installment titled “Black Magik” which promises to be a night of elegance & inked in underground sophistication.

Hey Delon, thanks for taking time out to have a chat to us. How ya doing?
Always well, thank you.

You’ve been a regular fixture at quite a few club spots around Joburg, South Africa as well as QC events and not to mention playing at the legendary “The End” in London.  How’s 2009 been for you so far?
2009 has been great for me musically. I still miss the old Therapy days, music and clubbing was at a peak then but I feel this year has laid some foundation and next year will be good times again for South African clubs and dance music.

How did your alias as the “Jack Hammer” come about or dare I ask?
Just something a thought was quite tongue in cheek and a bit cheeky that also lends itself to my more dark, techy, pumpy sound. And I just kinda like it.

How would you describe your music?
Deeply sexy, percussive, tech/tribal house.

You are hosting the Black Majik event at Voodoo Lounge on the 14 Nov which is a concept I’m very exited about. Is this going to be a monthly hosted event?
Absolutely! We want to do it monthly but as always we need people to make that happen. So I encourage anyone who enjoys quality, classy tunes and a more intelligent crowd to definitely NOT miss out! We are already planning the next one with a special guest DJ from outta town. Rome we're hoping actually.

Voodoo Lounge hmmmm, there’s just something about that place, isn’t it? It’s fast becoming the venue in JHB to host an event. What do you think?
Voodoo Lounge is A: a fantastic venue and very dynamic. I can't wait to use the outside space :) And B. the owner and manager are a pleasure to work with which always makes things nicer. But it's a great venue and yes, fast becoming thee venue in JHB for serious music.

What would you guys like to achieve with these Black Majik events from a music perspective?
The music policy is going to be very cutting edge and on par with international trends. The line up was very carefully planned and I think is one of the most dynamic line-ups I've seen in a while. The flow of style from DJ to DJ will be flawless.

Can you give us a run down of the DJ’s playing on the night and why you decided on these DJ’s?
In this order:
MISSRED
ROB TOCA
JACK HAMMER
CHRIS STOCK
SEAN KERMAN

I chose this line up simply cos I think all the artists are great!

Sounds like the punters are in for a dark and mysterious night? What can they expect from the pitch doctors form of their different music styles?
It'll go from deep funky house, to sexy tech tribal beats and tech-house into a bit of prog and then back into tech-house and techno.

With 2010 around the corner and the Soccer world cup in mind a lot of promoters and event organizers are probably starting to rub their hands together. How do you feel about the way events are being run at the moment in SA and do you think that we can look forward to some really great parties around that time?
I hope so, we're starting now to work on something REALLY amazing at an awesome venue that we hope to attract 15 -20 000 people to, with BIG internationals but we'll see how the sponsors' budgets are.

Can u give us a few tips to up and coming event organizers on how events should be run?
Never leave anything to the last minute and try to always foresee unforeseen problems and do your best to be prepared.

Where can one get in touch with you; for bookings, gig updates etc?
Facebook is the best for now - my site is still under construction. On Facebook : DJ JACK HAMMER AKA DELON PALM

Recently DJ MAG released it annual DJ poll results and to a certain degree I believe it has its credibility but a lot of people say that it’s more of a marketing driven scheme than a true reflection of who really is doing the business in the Electronic Dance Industry. How do you feel about the poll and if you could gauge it to give a more true reflection how would you go about it?

That's a tough one. I do believe marketing has a huge role obviously but there are so many other factors and at the end of the day whatever it is, if that's how the people vote, who are we to argue. I have no idea how I would go about it, with some thought I may think of something but right now I got zip.

Thanks Delon, wishing u all the best with the event.

Black Majik happens on Saturday 14 November 2009 at Voodoo Lounge. Check out the Black Majik event details here.
