FLIGHT is about the anticipation of a journey. It combines the intimacy of a house party, the elegance of a beautiful venue and the best the local trance scene has to offer. FLIGHT started when a small group of friends decided that they wanted to have a party where they could hear the best trance in beautiful surroundings joined by their friends and friends of friends. Since the next boarding is on the 4 April, Mr Spencer.com got a quick interview before liftoff…

How did the Flight theme come about?
Over dinner one night we were joking around and one of us said; “Imagine having a party on a plane?” From there the ideas just kind of kept flowing. The theme is very versatile, we haven’t even done half the stuff we want to yet!

Flight has achieved what many events have struggled to do like establishing a loyal friendly following while at the same time maintaining a high level of quality. What’s your secret?
We are all friends who just wanted to have a party where we can listen to the music we love and share it with our friends. The secret is having great friends to share awesome times with.

Who are the founders of Flight and what’s it like working together?
The Flight Crew is just a group of friends who happen to have very diverse skills but beyond that everyone is very passionate about Flight and that is probably the most important thing. Each of us have regular jobs so we try and split the responsibilities.
Andy K: Andy is in charge of personnel and one of the world class DJ’s. Andy has been delighting Flight passengers with his unique brand of trance from the first party.
Anastasia: Annie does a phenomenal job with the installation design and event branding. She is also the spirit of every party.
Brendon: Brendan does security and has taken his DJing to another dimension.
Juanita: Juanita manages the finances, writes all the copy and works the dancefloor.
Lachlan: Lachlan is in charge of the budget, merchandising and the creative for the artwork and design.
Ludgy: Ludgy takes care of communication and runs the database. He is also our resident VJ and technology expert. He also plays a killer set on the decks.
Niekie: Niekie, the master designer, is responsible for the design of all the flyers and print work that we do as well as our awesome website. She is also our photographer and responsible for capturing all our special Flight memories.
Sue: Sue is the networker supreme so she keeps the Facebook page up to date with the latest Flight information. Sue mixes the tunes selected by the Flight DJ’s for the Flight CD’s and with Andre (Custom Events) ensures that the sound is first class. She is also the only female DJ on the Crew and can kick any of the boys’ butts on the decks.

You have a strong trance following. Explain your love affair with trance.
The thing with trance is that once you have been swept along the big breakdown of a trance anthem nothing else can compare and you keep coming back for more. Trance has a big worldwide following but South Africa has had limited exposure to this genre. The more people come to Flight to experience the music we love the more they fall in love with trance.

Most of the Flight party goers are experienced party peeps, do you think people are longing for the old raves of the past?
Not at all! I think people are looking for something new and fresh. Flight passengers have been around a bit and they value quality music with friends in an exclusive setting. They don’t really want to go to the big impersonal events where they don’t know anyone.

The Flight events are day events. What is your thinking for throwing an event at this time of day?
People love having a party in the sun especially when you are listening to some of the best trance in the world played by world class DJ’s. There is also an element of surprise when you do an afternoon in-door party because it feels like you have partied all night but it’s only nine o’clock.

Flight events have been thrown at two different venues. How important is the venue for your events?
The venue is a crucial ingredient. If the venue cannot deliver a superior experience then we won’t use it. We have a responsibility to Flight passengers to bring them the best trance party in Johannesburg in every aspect.

What is your thinking when it comes to DJ's? Do you have residents and/or guests?
Part of the reason we started Flight is because we have world class DJ’s right here playing the best trance available anywhere in the world. There are five DJ’s on the Flight Crew which pretty much make the playlist full.

Where is Flight going into the future?
