Sifting through the herds of identikit Beatport sheep in the download charts or hearing the empty drivel that many of the biggest names soullessly churn out, you’d be forgiven for thinking that all the real musicians and original ideas have deserted dance music. If you know about Dutch duo ‘Mason‘ however, you’ll know that there’s a small corner of old Amsterdam where the musicianship’s force is still strong. .

Sure, they have their origins in serving up hugely popular club smashes (you might remember a little record called ‘Exceeder’), but with their charisma-packed debut album ‘They Are Among Us’, the boys known as Iason and Coen to their parents have shown that they are anything but simple dancefloor mechanics. Across 13 colourful tracks they show a knack for strong pop melodies and vocals, tongue-in-cheek humour, uncontrived versatility and excellent taste in their co-conspirators. They deftly balance the dance floor focused output of their Animal Language label releases with their passion for powerful songwriting and crossover appeal. “The album is a reflection of our love for pop songs, Italo disco and funk, while keeping it fun and playful” they explain, with the cosmopolitan feel and musical heritage of Amsterdam embodied within their eclectic, life-affirming sounds.

These guys are dedicated to their craft, and were in no hurry to rush their first LP after their early successes. “We threw away the previous album in 2007 because we weren’t happy, and started all over” they reveal. The finished product was formed in a loose and organic manner, with a good 50 tracks created during its gestation period, and features their eclectic dream list of collaborators – from rap legends to new age divas and indie heroes. “We worked in every possible way. Long distance without meeting. Us sending backing tracks and others doing vocals. Us writing vocals. Us building backing tracks around complete vocals. Being in studios in numerous places to record artists and work together in the same space, such as with Roisin Murphy.”

The sassy chanteuse lends her inimitable, seductive tones to the sensual Italo-disco thump of Boadicea, one of her most captivating moments in recent history, while indie throwbacks Aqualung give a haunting edge to the effervescent beauty of ‘Little Angel’. Blowtakes things back to the old skool with his stone-cold raps on the rousing ‘Runaway’, the legendary DMC (he of Run DMC fame) shows he’s still as sharp as ever, trading lines with soulful pop sensation Sam Sparro on ‘Corrected’, and London’s Sway shows that the UK brings the heat just as much as the US on the infectious pop-dance of ‘I Just Wanna Rock You’. As far as cast lists go, it’s a wonderfully unusual, eclectic and high-quality mix.

While Mason are deadly serious about their dedication to making music, ‘They Are Among Us’ exudes a refreshing sense of fun, youthfulness and energy. GARETH EMERY NORTHERN LIGHTS RE-LIT

The original ‘Northern Lights’ by DJ Mag world no.7 Gareth Emery was one of dance music’s hottest debut albums of 2010, hitting no.1 in the US iTunes Dance chart within hours of release and featuring ‘Sanctuary’, the undisputed trance anthem of the summer.

Now the album returns with a new twist: ‘Northern Lights Re-Lit’, where Gareth has handpicked a selection of his favorite producers to remix all twelve tracks from the album.

After a very limited promotional mail-out, support from A-list DJs has already been overwhelming, helping generate a massive buzz around the release from industry and fans alike. Tiesto’s already well behind the stunning remix of the Jerome Isma- Ae collaboration ‘Stars’ by Dutch house master Hardwell, Armin van Buuren is all over both the John O’Callaghan remix of ‘Too Dark Tonight’ and the Jorn van Deynhoven remix of ‘All Is Now’, whereas Above & Beyond and Markus Schulz have been championing Ashley Wallbridge’s epic progressive house r
emix of ‘Arrival’.

To further the celebrations, release parties for the album will be taking place across the world, including a 7-hour set from Gareth at Sankeys in Manchester on the day of release (sold out five weeks in advance), plus Dream in Miami during Ultra Week and the third Northern Lights Concert in Los Angles in April.

In short, it’s set to be another groundbreaking release from Gareth Emery on Napith Music.
‘Northern Lights Re-Lit’ will be available as digital download from 18th March 2011 and will feature a seamlessly blended DJ mix as well as the individual versions of every track on the album.

Bob Sinclair and Dimitri from Paris are back

Bob Sinclar and Dimitri From Paris have mixed Knights of the Playboy Mansion, due out this April on Defected Records.

Sinclar and Dimitri have certainly known each other long enough to have developed some creative chemistry. They first met some fifteen years ago in a Parisian record store, not long after which Sinclar released Dimitri's first album, Sacrebleu, through his Yellow Productions label.

"When I think about Playboy, the sound has to be disco," says Sinclar. "For me, the concept of Playboy worked best at the end of the Seventies, before Photoshop and silicone made the girls look more like cyborgs." Accordingly, he's filled his mix with shiny tracks by the likes of Candi Staton, Grace Jones and Boney M. Dimitri's CD is more contemporary, with artists such as Sebastién Tellier, Jimi Tenor and Tensnake. "It's disco-flavoured but a more modern take on it," he says. "You can call it nu-disco for lack of a better word. The lifespan of a mix CD can be incredibly short, so I'm looking for timeless music that will still stand up in a decade or more."

Monstrous Pedro Del Mar CD - “Mellomania”

Pedro Del Mar is the driving force behind his own record label and is also an internationally acclaimed DJ/Producer and radio host. Over the years he carefully built a rock solid reputation with his internationally known “Mellomania” radio show and his releases on almost every major label. With this brand new double mixcompilation “Mellomania 20” Pedro brings an energizing, high-class trance set based on the music we get to hear during his acclaimed radio shows.

The “Mellomania” series, with their wonderfully term-contradicting title and exotic covers, have been something of a Central European preserve. There they’ve enjoyed a following that started out cult in 2004 and has turned into a clockwork-regular CD pick-up for continental European trance lovers.

When it comes to compilations numbers don’t lie and it’s a milestone to see the series hit its ‘big 2-0’. As with Mellomania’s very first ‘step’, Pedro himself is once again the man at the mixing controls. Collectors of the series will attest there’s never been much ‘mello’ about his mix series. The first two tracks of volume one, released in 2004, were from Tiësto and Armin van Buuren - so that should be some guide as to the energy levels on offer. There’s however one slight difference after 19 episodes: “Mellomania 20” is the first one to be released by Black Hole Recordings.

When asked about the concept of the release itself, Pedro explains: “The CD is divided in two parts reflecting the styles of the global Mellomania radio shows, which also reflects my DJ gigs. The majority of the 38 tunes from the album stem from across the world and are exclusive and unreleased so far. Disc 1 can be described as the ‘club session’, featuring 100% melodic and uplifting trance tracks, whilst disc 2 is a sort of ‘beach session’, including progressive house, Balearic and progressive trance tunes.”

Next to some of the biggest names of the international EDM scene like Richard Durand with “Wide Awake”, Roger Shah with “Life”, Will Holland with “Start Again”, Dash Berlin with “Disarm Yourself”, Cosmic Gate with “Raging”, Aly & Fila featuring Tiff Lacey with “Paradise”, First State featuring Sarah Howells with “Reverie” and Super8 & Tab with “My Enemy”, these two mixes also feature many outstanding new talents as well as numerous Pedro Del Mar productions.
