African Hip Hop Indaba 2011 Print E-mail
Hip hop is not just music, its dancing, poetry and graffiti. It’s a whole life originating from the 70’s that creates a sanctuary and relaxation space for those that walk the talk, and live the life. This is the essence that the Hip Hop Indaba will strut, and Cape Town will come on fire on the 5th and 6th of August with the 2 day event being held at the Good Hope Centre.

The event officially launched in the year 2000 as a result of bringing the various Hip Hop events under one banner in Cape Town and has since become a national event. Whilst the event caters for all the elements of Hip Hop namely break-dance, graffiti, turntablism (DJing) & rapping the main focus is on break-dancing. With the ties with “Six Step” the organizers of “Battle Of the Year” Germany, they have secured the rights to host the South African Qualifiers to send the winning break-dance crew to represent South Africa in the international “Battle Of the Year” break-dance championships. Since the inception of the event “Heal the Hood Project” has sent over 100 break-dancers to “Battle of the Year”.  This year “Heal the Hood Project “ will be sending the winning break-dance crew to the “Battle of the Year- African Qualifier” being held in Zimbabwe on the 27th August 2011, where the winning team will represent the continent of Africa at the final event “Battle of the Year” held in Montpellier France in November 2011.

If you want to compete? There are national eliminations across South Africa for each city to send their best dance crews, rappers, graffiti artists, beat boxers and DJ’s to compete at the African Hip Hop Indaba. The event is open to all and registration needs to be completed one month prior to the event in order to finalize the program, no registration fees are charged and entrants have only to pay the cover charge at the event.
