Eddy Virgo - Long live hard dance
Tuesday, 18 January 2011 06:28
Mr Spencer recently caught up with hard dance DJ sensation Eddy Virgo. After ending a long residency at Truth nightclub in Midrand, we asked him why…

The changes that Truth made to its music policy have not allowed me to continue at the club as a resident Hardstyle DJ. We will see what the future holds when it comes to me playing at the bigger events at Truth but no nothing has been set in stone.

I started as a fill in DJ, playing once every 2 weeks or so and this was around the end of 2002 / 2003, and then became a full resident at the club in mid 2005. So I was a DJ at Truth for a good 8 years. I was hoping to reach the 10 year mark though.

Don’t worry Eddy, change is always good. Keep Walking!

So early beginnings? Tell us a bit more about that.
Yeah!!! I still remember at that time I was doing a Hardstyle Dance radio show on Tuks FM (a leading campus radio station from the University of Pretoria) every Friday and Saturday night and also headed up the Production department making the radio adverts and jingles for the station when our marketing lady got Truth to advertise with us. I had a meeting with the Club manager at the time to go through the adverts I had made for them and he asked me if I am the DJ who does the Hardstyle radio show and if I have a demo and I replied yes. So I gave him a demo of mine. Not even 3 days later he contacted me and said the owner of Truth (Who was the first owner) loved this new style of music and wants me to come and play a 30min Hardstyle demo set on Saturday … And Yeah, here we are today …. I started at Truth as a Hardstyle DJ and left there as a Hardstyle DJ.

Mr Spencer, an avid supporter of good hard music, knows for certain that the Hardstyle floor was always well supported.
Firstly just to clear something up, on a normal week to week basis the dance floor was always called “The Pit” or otherwise known as the “The Dungeon”. I did quite a few events at Truth where the main arena was called the Hardstyle floor but not on a regular basis. I suppose with the majority of support on that floor being Hardstyle followers across SA coming every week, that’s where the nickname “Hardstyle Floor” came from. Hardstyle was always only catered for at the end of the night and very seldom did it get main set ( 12 – 3 am ), but If I can tell you one thing that not a lot of people knows, it is that a lot of the Hardstyle crowd from Durban drove up on a normal Saturday afternoon all the way straight to Truth just to come and listen to what they loved so much, Hardstyle and left Truth the next morning when the club closed and drove straight back to Durban.” Now if you don’t call that dedication to a style of music, then you in the wrong scene brutha …. Lol

Do you think it is the end of Hardstyle at Truth?
Truth has changed their line up and dance floor to a Trance room, so there will not be Hardstyle on a week to week basis anymore. Maybe they will have once off DJ sets at bigger events but only they can tell you that.  You can request that information from them. A business decision was made by Truth to change their club and Hardstyle was excluded. It was hard for me to accept as Truth has become my DJ home for such a long time, but I realise that change is probably needed for the growth of my style. I was not fired, my position just became redundant. They said I could stay and change my style to trance, but that would never be possible for me. I cannot change my passion and will never let the loyal Hardstyle fans down.

And your career as a DJ now?
Well, I have now had a lot more time to concentrate on my production and event company (X-Clusive Events) in the last month. I have also gotten quite a few bookings in January and February already for Durban and Cape Town and in 2011 I am planning on concentrating more on my production side and releasing an album early in the new year.  Along with that and the most important thing at the moment is that I hosted a MASSIVE HARD DANCE ONLY event called “ REBORN 2010 “ @ Recess night club in centurion on the 16th of December for the Rebirth of our Hard Dance music scene in Johannesburg and to prove to all the club owners, promoters and punters that we will not allow the Hard dance scene to disappear and that we are a greater community than what people seem to think.  We don’t just listen to our music, we believe in our music and that’s what sets us apart from everybody else ….  LONG LIVE HARD DANCE IN SA!!!!

Anything else?
Thank you to Adam and Andrea of Mr Spencer for running such an amazing and informative website that always keeps the clubbers in tune with what’s happening in the EDM scene and for the support you have shown me and Hardstyle over all these years. I would also like to say thanks to Truth and the crew for an amazing journey over the last couple years, I have learnt a lot from the experience and will always have great memories of the club and people involved. Last and most importantly I would like to thank all the loyal Clubbers in SA who has been following Hardstyle and my DJ career in the last 12 years, I would like to thank each and every one of them for the Die Hard support they have given me. I hope that this challenge we embraced proves that NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE, NO MATTER HOW TOUGH IT GETS, AND NO MATTER WHO STANDS IN YOUR WAY …….. YOU ARE ABLE TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND OUT TO DO …  DON’T JUST DREAM, LIVE YOUR DREAM, BREATHE YOUR DREAM, EAT YOUR DREAM … CAUSE IN THE END YOUR DREAM WILL BECOME A REALITY !!!! Hardstyle will survive in SA and I will dedicate every second of my life to make this happen … HARDSTYLE 4 LIFE!!!!! Peace out …..
